The company does an excellent job of publishing quantitative data that relates the exact numeric impact the company has had and is currently having on the environment. While this quantitative data is very informative, the report and web pages are missing discussion of the data and goals for the future. Throughout the report, Monsanto emphasizes how sustainable agriculture can improve yields while reducing the quantity of resources used to produce a crop. However, there is a lack of discussion about what Monsanto is doing to decreases the amount of materials they consume during production and distribution of its products. Additionally, the report does not contain information about the challenges encountered by Monsanto during the implementation of their environmental policy. Beyond a lack of discussion about the company’s environmental impact, the report also lacks information pertaining to safety practices Monsanto has enacted. The report contains a minimal discussion of product safety, but there is no information about fines and violations levied on the company for health and safety related infractions, an emergency plan of action for employees and customers, or an organizational structure for ensuring health and safety. Monsanto could benefit from including more information about health and safety, especially pertaining to workers dealing with pesticide treated seeds, as increased transparency would demonstrate the company’s commitment to the creation of products that are both functional and safe to handle and consume.
