Sara Lee Corporation has identified all important environmental and social visions on its website and in its sustainability report for 2010. It has developed the Members of Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) to design, package, and distribute products that lessen the impact on the ecosystem. Earth grain Brand has created a “Plot to save the earth one field at a time,” by producing Eco Grain bread to educate consumers about innovative agricultural practices. Its Global Environmental Management System (GEMS) has achieved the ISO 14001 certification, has made huge strides towards reducing the carbon footprint at Sara Lee, and has a goal to further reduce raw material usage by 8% by 2012. This corporation reports the energy used, water used, and waste disposed indexed to production and sets goals to reduce its usage by 2%, 10%, and 12% respectively. Sara Lee has installed energy efficient lighting and equipment and invested in solar photovoltaic power at bakery locations. In its life cycle analysis (LCA), it created a standard unit load for all trucks to maximize the amount of product trailer and minimize greenhouse gas emissions from additional truck traffic. Based on the LCA, Sara Lee prioritizes products that have the most assessable impacts on the environment. In 2008, Sara Lee Corporation became involved with the Carbon Disclosure Project and was scored 89 out of 100. This corporation respects its employees and offers health care, planning for work/life balance support, and counseling. Sara Lee has safety committees, newsletters, safety huddles, training meetings, suggestion programs, and intranet team sites to share the best practices among plants and promote employee health and safety. In addition to strict human rights guidelines, Sara Lee institutes community service projects to bring food security to communities in need. To encourage community service, Sara Lee has a matching grant program, so that when an employee donates to a charity, this corporation will match their investment to the charity. Dedicated to habitat conservation, biodiversity, and reduction of greenhouse gases, Sara Lee represents its company as a leader in the foods industry with environmental initiatives that will protect the environment.
