China Ocean Shipping has achieved the highest overall social and environmental responsibility scores in the entire Chinese sector and is to be congratulated for this impressive accomplishment. In the area of environmental reporting it scored points on everything except environmental impediments and challenges, climate change, green purchasing and renewable energy consumption. COSCO also demonstrated high accomplishment in the area of energy consumption by providing extremely comprehensive reduction plans. While its social performance was not quite as impeccable as its environmental performance, it remains the leader of social performance amongst Chinese firms. Some small areas for improvement as far as social performance would be to provide data concerning the age and ethnicity of employees instead of merely mentioning these categories while only providing data concerning gender. A few other simple improvements could be made by stating the company’s position on the human rights issues of corporal punishment and sexual harassment as well as reporting data on the lost workday case rate. China Ocean Shipping Company’s overall environmental and social performance is a model within the Chinese context. Perhaps the single area in need of most improvement is not related to content, but instead to presentation. On the COSCO website there is no pdf of its 2007 Sustainable Development Report is provided. Also when the report is downloaded page by page and compiled into a pdf report it totals nearly 300 pages in length. Both the download and compilation processes as well as the length of the document can be quite inconvenient, and it would be better to create a more consolidated pdf version available on the COSCO website for the release of the next report.
