There are descriptions of initiatives to reduce customer consumption of energy and water, however there is nothing about the company’s use of these resources itself. Also lacking is any discussion of challenges such as global warming, ecosystem conservation, and any quantitative data regarding environmental and social performance and investment. The saving grace of the company’s reporting is its social initiatives, including solid programs for community education, supplier diversity, and employee volunteerism. CenterPoint has much work to do to raise its score. A reasonable place to start would be to describe organization and management in place to deal with environmental and safety protection, beyond just saying that the basic policies should be followed. It needs to discuss whether an environmental management system exists. A major benefit would be had by reporting all the numerical information that demonstrates the company’s performance, including energy use, water use, recycling rates, recordable incident rate etc. Because CenterPoint has received several awards for environmental and social performance, it seems that it must have much of the aforementioned organization and data. However, without any specific reporting, it cannot be said how well the company is actually doing in these areas. Analyzed by Karen de Wolski, and posted to the web on 9/16/2008.
