In the social sphere, the company has a plethora of initiatives involving healthcare, drug testing, and AIDS awareness. In the environmental sphere, they report a substantial amount of emissions data, including SOx, NOx, and VOC, as well as hazardous waste production. Merck's shortcomings lie in its outdated CSR (now two years old), and thus finding recent data online becomes a scramble. An updated and consolidated CSR would not only expediate the scoring process, but also help Merck illustrate its increased dedication to protecting the environment and preserving the communities in which it works. (Note, 07-06-07: After asking for a PDF version of the Code of Conduct, the company responded quickly and received additional points for their code). Analyzed by Ata ul Malik Khan, and posted to the web on 11/13/2007. Company Description Merck helps those who are hooked on hamburgers. Drugs treating ailments associated with American eating habits -- high cholesterol, hypertension, and heart failure -- are among Merck's biggest sellers. Its drugs include hypertension fighters Cozaar and Hyzaar and cholesterol combatants Vytorin, Zetia, and Zocor. Merck makes drugs in a broad range of other therapeutic areas as well: Propecia treats male pattern baldness, Singulair treats asthma, and Fosamax fights osteoporosis. In addition to pharmaceuticals, the company makes childhood and adult vaccines for such diseases as measles, mumps, hepatitis, and shingles. In 2006 Merck was awarded FDA approval for its cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil. Source: Hoovers |
